The Cardinals could be without their starting running back after he sustained a foot injury.

Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington re-injured his left foot in practice on Thursday and could be out for an extended period of time, according to Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports. Should Ellington miss substantial time, this is a tough blow to Arizona.

Ellington, a sixth-round pick in 2013, rushed for 652 yards on an impressive 5.5. yards per carry and scored three touchdowns for a 10-6 Cardinals team that barely missed the playoffs. Coming into this season, Ellington is expected to be the feature back in an offense with Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd on the outside and Carson Palmer at the controls.

Head coach Bruce Arians likes to throw to his backs, another area Ellington will be sorely missed if sidelined. As a rookie, Ellington caught 39 passes for 371 yards and a touchdown.

If Ellington can't play Monday night against the San Diego Chargers, his duties will fall to Jonathan Dwyer and Stepfan Taylor. Taylor was drafted a round ahead of Ellington last year but only had 36 carries for 115 yards. Dwyer didn't do much more, accounting for 197 yards on 49 attempts.
