The Dallas Cowboys signed Michael Sam to their practice squad Wednesday after he was cut by the Rams last week and cleared waivers.

The Dallas Cowboys signed defensive end Michael Sam to their practice squad Wednesday. Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, did not make the St. Louis Rams' 53-man roster last week and cleared waivers, making him a free agent.

At his daily press conference with the media, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett discussed the move.

"We feel like he has a chance to come in at a position that we've tried to address and compete for a spot," he said. "We've gotten nothing but good reports. He was a very good player in college, his track record speaks for itself."

Garrett, asked multiple times about the significance of bringing in Sam, reiterated that it was a football move and nothing more.

"What people say outside of this organization is really up to them, we're focused on the Niners," Garrett said. "This is about football. We evaluated (Sam) as a football player and felt he could help us as a football player."

Sam, the 2013 SEC co-defensive player of the year, couldn't crack a Rams roster that was loaded at the defensive end position. The Cowboys, on the other hand, are desperate for defensive help wherever they can get it.

Sam is expected to practice today and will wear No. 46.
