The No. 9 pick in the NBA draft will be sidelined as he recovers from surgery.

Charlotte Hornets rookie Noah Vonleh is set to miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a sports hernia, the team has announced. Vonleh, the No. 9 pick in June's NBA draft, suffered the injury during a recent workout.

Vonleh, who turned 19 years old last week, was one of the youngest players to enter the draft after one season at Indiana. He is expected to add depth to a Hornets frontcourt that includes Al Jefferson, Cody Zeller, Bismack Biyombo and Marvin Williams.

At 6'10, 240 pounds, Vonleh averaged 11.3 points and nine rebounds per game for the Hoosiers. Along with Williams and fellow free agent signing Lance Stephenson, Vonleh's presence is one of the reasons behind a recent swell of optimism surrounding the newly re-branded Hornets. Even before the injury, Vonleh was considered to be more of a long-term prospect than someone who can step in and help Charlotte immediately.

The Hornets open up the regular season at home against the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 29.
