Timbers captain appears to have broken his leg after going into 50/50 ball with Mark Bloom.

Will Johnson was forced out of Saturday's match after appearing to break his right leg just 8 seconds into the Portland Timbers' match with Toronto FC. The injury occurred shortly after kickoff when Johnson and Mark Bloom both went to ground for a 50/50 ball. Johnson's trailing leg struck Bloom's awkwardly and while no foul was called, play was stopped immediately as players called for medical attention.

Play was stopped for about seven minutes while medics addressed Johnson's injury and ultimately stretchered the Timbers captain off the field. Johnson was immediately sent to the hospital and although there has been no official confirmation, replays showed his leg bending in an extremely awkward fashion.

Presuming it is a broken leg, Johnson would surely be out for the remainder of the season, but he might be capable of returning by the start of the 2015 season in March.

Johnson, a fixture with the Canadian national team, is in the midst of his most productive stage of his career. Since joining the Timbers ahead of the 2013 season, Johnson has scored 15 goals and has seven assists. Both totals were more than he had scored in his entire six-year MLS career up until then.
